Almost everyone knows what calluses and corns are - this is the most common pathology in people, which causes significant discomfort and pain, especially when walking or standing. One of the effective ways to treat and prevent such formations is the use of special cushions and insoles.

Their principle of action is based on changing the distribution of pressure on the foot, providing additional support in the right places. The use of such devices for shoes brings many advantages:

  • cushions and insoles help to evenly distribute body weight, reducing the pressure on certain areas of the foot;
  • support the metatarsal bones and reduce pressure on the pads of the foot, which is especially important if corns and calluses are localized in this area;
  • provide additional cushioning and help correct flat feet;
  • cushions and insoles can significantly reduce the pain and discomfort caused by corns and calluses.

Illinois Foot & Ankle Clinic, under the direction of Dr. Alex Yanovskiy, DPM, offers personalized consultations and customized solutions for each patient. We strive to ensure that you can enjoy life without the pain and discomfort caused by foot problems.

When Is Padding or Insoles Recommended?

The use of cushions and insoles can be recommended in various cases where foot discomfort and pain make life difficult.

  1. Flatfoot:
  • the use of insoles for flat feet helps to restore the correct position of the foot, reduces stress on certain areas and prevents the development of complications.
  1. Foot pain:
  • cushions and insoles help distribute the load evenly, provide support and cushioning, which reduces pain and prevents further damage.
  1. Calluses and corns:
  • the use of metatarsal pads and insoles helps to reduce friction and pressure, which promotes healing of calluses and corns and prevents their reoccurrence.
  1. High stress on the feet:
  • people who spend a lot of time on their feet or who are involved in sports put increased stress on their feet. These orthotics provide additional cushioning and support, reducing the risk of injury.
  1. Posture and gait disorders:
  • custom orthotic insoles help correct foot posture and improve the biomechanics of gait, which has a positive effect on the overall health of the body.
  1. Diabetic foot:
  • cushions and insoles help reduce pressure on sensitive areas of the foot, preventing the development of ulcers and other complications.

At our Illinois Foot & Ankle clinic, a thorough diagnosis and selection of orthotic accessories is performed, taking into account the individual characteristics of each patient.

Preparation for Using Padding or Insoles

In order to maximize the effect of using cushions and insoles, it is important to properly prepare for their selection and use.

Recommendations

Consult an orthopedist:

  • at the appointment, the doctor will determine the cause of discomfort and select the most appropriate solutions. They will perform a thorough diagnosis of your foot condition, including an examination, gait analysis and, if necessary, additional tests (X-rays, CT scan);
  • depending on your foot problems (flat feet, corns, calluses, corns, etc.), will recommend certain types of insoles - metatarsal pads, insoles for flat feet or customized orthotic insoles.

Attention should be paid to the materials from which the orthopedic products are made. They should be of high quality, hypoallergenic and durable.

Be sure to try on the cushions or insoles before you buy them. They should fit well in your shoes without causing discomfort or additional pain.

We recommend to start wearing your new cushions or insoles gradually, increasing the amount of time you use them each day. This will help your feet adapt to the new environment. During the first few weeks of use, monitor your sensations closely. If discomfort or pain occurs, see your podiatrist for adjustments.

The Padding or Insoles Process

At Illinois Foot & Ankle Clinic, we offer a comprehensive approach to the selection and use of cushions and insoles.

These can be prefabricated products

  1. Shoe insoles: universal, can be inserted into any shoe to improve cushioning and support.
  2. Metatarsal pads: placed under the forefoot to reduce pressure on the metatarsal bones and prevent calluses and corns.
  3. Inner soles for shoes: suitable for all shoes, provide additional cushioning and comfort,
  4. Foot padding: soft pads that reduce friction and pressure on certain areas of the foot. They are made of various materials - gels, foam, silicone, leather, textiles.

If off-the-shelf products are not suitable, they can be customized to fit the anatomy of your feet.

Manufacturing process

  • Impressions: the patient's feet are scanned or cast using special materials.
  • Modeling: based on the impressions, a 3D model of the foot is created, from which individual products are made.
  • Material selection: materials are selected according to the individual characteristics of the patient.
  • Manufacturing: the insole is cut out of the selected material and equipped with the necessary correction elements (supinator, wedges, wrist restraints).

Individual insoles last 3–4 years, ready-made - 1–2 years, pads - 6–12 months.

Expected Outcomes

The use of cushions and insoles, properly selected by specialists, will bring many positive changes:

  • improved blood circulation in the feet, which promotes healing and prevents the reappearance of problem areas;
  • reducing pain in the feet, knees and back;
  • providing additional support for the arch of the foot and other important areas, making every walk more comfortable.
  • improving the overall condition of the feet;
  • preventing the formation of new calluses and corns.

At Illinois Foot & Ankle Clinic, we are committed to providing you with the best results, helping you eliminate pain, improve comfort, and prevent new foot problems.
