How is a stress fracture different from a break?

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone. They can cause chronic pain, but don’t always announce themselves as clearly as larger breaks.

How could I have gotten a stress fracture without noticing?

Stress fractures are often caused by excesses in normal daily activity. Things like walking too much or jumping from even a small height can result in fractures. They can also be caused by running, playing sports, or even a short walk on occasion. Because they are small cracks, the pain might not always register as abnormal. At least not at first. Chronic pain is often the tell-tale sign.

What are the symptoms?

The most easily identified symptom of a stress fracture is chronic pain aggravated by use (ie, walking, running, other athletic activity) that gets better with rest.

How is it diagnosed?

Dr. Yanovskiy can identify stress fractures with an examination and an x-ray. If you’re experiencing chronic heel pain that is aggravated by use and made better with rest, a quick appointment with Dr. Yanovskiy will help source and treat it, so you can get back up on your feet.

What treatments are available for stress fractures? Will I have to wear a cast?

There are a variety of effective treatments options, all of which Dr. Yanovskiy offers at his podiatry office. In some cases, rest is the best option. The body will heal itself. In more involved cases, surgical shoes or a walking boot can stabilize the heel to help it heal quickly and properly. Some patients benefit from anti-inflammatory medications, vitamin D pills, or physical therapy. Upon diagnosis, Dr. Yanovskiy will talk you through the available options and help you determine the best course of treatment.
