About Heel Spurs
A heel spur is a bony projection that forms on the heel bone, often where soft tissue attaches to the calcaneus. Some heel spurs appear under the heel near the plantar fascia. Others form at the back of the heel near the Achilles tendon attachment.
The spur itself is not always the direct cause of pain. Many painful cases involve nearby soft tissue irritation, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon irritation, bursitis, inflammation, pressure from shoes, or abnormal foot mechanics.

Plantar heel spurs form on the bottom of the heel bone near the plantar fascia attachment. Pain may be worse with first steps or long standing.

Orthotics, heel cups, or supportive shoes may reduce pressure through the heel and improve foot mechanics.
Stretching the calf and plantar fascia may help reduce tension at the heel attachment. Therapy may also address gait and strengthening.
